“So if you didn’t catch yesterday's morning shit show, it went basically like this” -Stephen Wright

“The CDC put out its official recommendations and requirements states should meet before reopening schools. Trump went to twitter, shitted on the CDC recommendations, demanding that k-12 schools fully open up in the fall. He threatened to cut federal funding if they do not. Then the coronavirus task force held a press conference, minus Fauci, because he’s on the President’s shit list.
“Betsy Devos said she really, really, really wants kids back in school. She does not know how to do this, offered no suggestions. Just that they need to open, and leaves it up to local officials to figure it out.
“Vice President Pence said children are resilient and basically made out of cartilage with healthy lungs. They probably won’t get sick, so we shouldn’t worry about them. There is also no disagreement between the CDC and Trump. Trump wants schools to open, and just doesn’t want the CDC’s guidelines to be the reason for schools not opening.
“Yes, he actually said he doesn’t want states to keep their schools closed just because their own CDC says it is not safe to open.
“So the VP says, don’t worry, let’s bring up the Director of the CDC to clarify. And I could‘ve sworn I heard this guy gulp off camera.
“But the director of the CDC comes up and says he also wants schools to open safely. He said he likes his job and wants to keep it; therefore, he is also in full agreement with Trump, despite the guidelines they released hours before.
“So then Dr. Birx comes on and says half the country has seen a surge of new cases. The country is worse off than it was back at the start of all this. She said they should return to phase 1 and start all over.
“Now, an astute reader may wonder how do half the states return to phase 1, and still expect to open by fall? Good question. And while you were thinking about it, Birx tries to leave the podium. But before she gets away, Pence stops her and suggests she talk about that other thing about the children. She hesitates, then agrees.
“She comes back up to the mic and says most children probably won’t die. Maybe 0.02%. And usually the ones who die were already sick, so you parents at home may want to keep an eye on them. Oh- and we have virtually no data on how transmissible the virus is in children because we’ve barely tested any of them, but let me get out of your hair.
“Pence comes back and says, see, we’re good here.

                                                                 *****
“So while all that is going on, Cuomo is holding his own press conference. He says I don’t even give a shit what Trump is saying. It’s not worth responding to the clown. States control school openings, and we will do it as safely as possible, end of discussion. Other states blew off our warnings, and now they are paying the price. You want to fix your states? Pull your heads out of your asses and follow our example.

                                                                 *****
“And Fauci has gone total rogue. He has been giving interviews across the media spectrum, politely telling anyone who will listen that following Trump’s orders regarding the Coronavirus will lead to certain doom. Death and economic disaster on a scale never seen before. Please turn back while you still can.
“And now you are filled in.”

  5. It's not just Trump.
Poeple who believe that getting rid of Trump alone will cure the corruption that is government are naive at best. Of course Trump is destructive. Of course he must be stopped. Pence and so many others could easily not create Medicare for All or some other actual form of universal healthcare unattached to employment. Many other political hopefuls will continue the non-taxation of billionaires and mega-corporations while doing nothing about the climate crisis. The shit show will continue unless we get more actual progressives as government.

  6. Thank you for this! Any chance you know where I can find the clip of Betsy saying 0.02%? I looked on YouTube and Googled it...even checked Twitter and I can't find it. Perhaps they're trying to protect her...

    1. It was Birx who said it, not De Vos, and it was 0.1 percent. This is from the transcript on July 8:

“…THE VICE PRESIDENT: Did you want to talk about the risk to children (inaudible)?

“DR. BIRX: I think the Vice President covered that incredibly well. We know the mortality rate in under 25 from the CDC data is less than 0.1 percent. And so that has been holding.

“But until we know how many have been infected, we have no evidence that there is significant mortality in children without coexisting diseases. And that’s what we’re looking for right now, is to really make sure we’ve unturn- — overturned every rock and understand that in deep detail.

“THE VICE PRESIDENT: Thanks, Deborah. Right here, and then there…”

  7. Let's not forget the more serious issue here: Thousands of people are dying because of Trump and his administration.

It was Trump who had shut down the office responsible for responding to pandemics in 2018. Trump also defunded the CDC, though he was warned by the Obama administration about the real possibility of pandemics across the world before taking office. Once in office, he ignored intelligence reports.

Now consider Trump lied to the public about his knowing the Coronavirus was a serious threat long before it was called a pandemic as early as January; that on February 28th for instance, Trump called it “a Democratic hoax”; that when asked about the role he played in the U.S. government’s gross failure to anticipate and contain the Coronavirus, Trump responded, “I don’t take responsibility at all”; that when asked about the federal government helping states across the country, he responded, “We’re not a shipping clerk.” Trump did absolutely nothing for 10 weeks!

When Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City pleaded that the city’s hospitals are in need of help and to mobilize the military to deploy critical medical supplies, Trump’s response was “I’m not dealing with him.”

American citizens are dying because of Trump’s reprehensible ignorance, egregious incompetence, and malignant narcissism! If Trump had been prepared to take action during the first crucial days and weeks and allowed Dr. Anthony Fauci to be the only spokesperson, this pandemic could have been contained in America!

  8. Can you please provide a citation for the

  9. What De Vos said:

"...And then we see as we talk about reopening schools, there are some creating false paradigms for the fall. And here, right in our neighborhood, the D.C. area, Fairfax County, which is one of the most well-funded — I would call it an elite public school system in America — offered families a so-called 'choice' for this fall: either zero days in school for their students or two days. And their springtime attempt at distance learning was a disaster. I have to — I give this as an example because things like this cannot happen again in the fall. It would fail America’s students, and it would fail taxpayers who pay high taxes for their education.

"Ultimately, it’s not a matter of 'if' schools should reopen, it’s simply a matter of 'how.' They must fully open, and they must be fully operational. And how that happens is best left to education and community leaders...

"The American Academy of Pediatrics noted: Keeping schools closed 'places children and adolescents at considerable risk of morbidity and, in some cases, mortality.' The Pediatrics guidance concluded that everyone 'should start with a goal of having students physically present in school.' 'Fully open' and 'fully operational' means that students need a full school year or more, and it’s expected it will look different depending on where you are..."

  10. "'There is nothing in the data that would suggest that kids being back in school is dangerous to them,' DeVos said, when asked by Bash if she can assure parents and students that schools will be safe and pressed on health guidance that says children are at highest risk when meeting in full-sized, in-person classes -- doubling down on a similar comment she made last week..."
